Poor Manuel II Paleologos - he just wanted to defend his empire.
Our latest pope, Benedictus XVI, has recently stumbled (and fell) on the teachings of one of the latest Byzantine emperors, Manuel II Paleologos. To the horror and fury of a very touchy Muslim clergy, he cited the late emperor’s thoughts regarding the Muslim and Turkish expansion in his time.
